Your Business Has Only 2 Functions! So What Are They?

Innovation and Marketing.

Your innovation would be what ever your products or services do better, faster, cheaper, longer, shorter or whatever than anybody else. Your role is to Market that innovation like there’s no tomorrow. Meaning put it in front of as many people who are looking to buy it as you can. Sounds simple enough right?

Well it is…sort of. The thing is that you need to put it in front of them before someone else does. (Your competition). There are millions of people out there with the same or even better innovations than you. So why would someone buy yours?

Here’s a little story about how people come first and business comes second no matter what industry you’re in. I’m a musician of 22 years or so and I’ve been buying equipment to help me realize my musical aspirations for all of these 22 years. I love to buy music gear! I Love Love Love it! I’ve never once had to be convinced into buying a single piece of it. I’ve bought gear from just about every music store in Sydney Australia and I’ll tell you something…

They never push anything on to me. They KNOW all they have to do is get me to pick up that guitar and my own desire to own it will do the rest. I’ve sold off a ton of other stuff ( “That I just had to own” at the time) to raise the money to buy a single item because I wanted it so much. I remember this one time…

I dropped in to ask about a $395 guitar pedal I liked and happened to mention how I love Fender Telecasters but I don’t like the look of the headstock (the bit that holds the tuning thingies you turn to tune it). He points up at the wall of guitars and says “Check that out”. It was a Cole Clark Culprit! Basically it’s Cole Clark’s version of the Telecaster only it has the best headstock (In my opinion) ever to be created on a guitar. As I go into a dream state he says “Have a go man”. I was like “Nah I gotta get to work, I’m already late”. As I was talking to him (he doesn’t mention the guitar again) my eyes keep being drawn to the guitar. He goes “just pick it up Pete”! I went “Oh alright”. I slowly took it down from the rack. It felt Soooooooo Good! I said, “I gotta plug it in now”. Long story short…

An hour and a half later I hung it back up on the wall, slowly backed away from it still all gooey from the experience and went to work. I couldn’t stop thinking about it all day. So I went home and worked out what I could sell to raise the money. Then went back to the store the next day with my deposit. I looked up at the wall and my heart jumped in to my mouth…It was gone! He said a guy came in and bought it about an hour after I left. So…

I ordered one on the spot and made sure it had the exact same specs as the one I played. The same wood, colour, same pick up arrangement. EVERYTHING. I had to wait 8 months before my guitar finally arrived. Here’s the video of this momentus occasion.

People love to buy things. You don’t need to be pushy if you have what your prospect wants. They want it and they’ll buy it from you if you just help them understand what it will do for them. I could buy that guitar anywhere. The only reason I go to that shop is because the guys there are awesome. I’ve been there when they’ve told a broke 16 year old kid “Yeah sure you can play the Gibson Les Paul” ($2000+ guitar) and when they helped him plug it in to a marshall stack or whatever it was then said “Turn It Up Bro”!

That is Awesome Customer care. When I told the owner Pete how cool that was he told me the story how when he was a kid he asked the guy in the shop if he could play the Fender strat and the guy basically abused him and said “NO that’s what you can play”! (Some piece of junk). He vowed to himself when he opened his shop that any kid will be able to play any guitar they want in his shop. He knows how a great guitar will inspire you and he also knows that that kid will remember the first time they ever played a REAL guitar was in his shop. They’ll buy from him forever. I’m tearing up as I remember how I felt that day.

Sometimes I drive past 10 different music shops with the exact same thing I want, on my way to visit my mate where he works to buy it from him. Why would someone do that? Why would they come to you over everyone else? You sell Magnetic Sponsoring too don’t you? Why would someone buy it from you instead of the thousands of others selling it?

They’ll buy it form you because they know you care about them. They know You, they like YOU, they TRUST YOU. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.     That’s an awesome story Pete, and I love the video. I haven’t played my guitar in a while, but it made me want to pick it up again :)

    As for the message, you are dead on that people buy from those they already know and have a relationship with. I’ve often passed up buying a product from someone just so I could buy it from someone I already knew. It’s human nature really.
